January 24th - Cash in New York, the Florida Death Penalty, and I-75 Guard Rails

 

It seems like New York is going to pass a bill requiring brick-and-mortar businesses to accept cash. They are trying to make transactions more accessible for seniors, the homeless, and undocumented persons. In order to get around the law, businesses would have to have a gift card vending machine available in the store.

The Florida Supreme court has loosened the requirements for the death penalty in the state. It essentially lowers the number of layers of unanimous jury decisions to impose the death penalty on a convicted person. In 2016 the Florida Supreme court tightened the requirements after a US Supreme court case found our legal system gave too much authority to judges for the death penalty.

Starting next week the FDOT will be installing guard rails onto the Paynes Prairie section of 1-75. It's to stop cars from careening off into the swamp. The project will cost just over a $1 million and take a few months.
