Lake City is firing their Director of Information Technology After a criminal hacked into the city’s computers, forcing them to pay a ransom of $460,000 in bitcoin.
It all started when an employee opened an infected e-mail that went on to lockdown the city’s systems. Instead of fighting the hacker, it was cheaper to simply pay the ransom. The city actually made back most of its money thanks to insurance.
As a result of this situation, the Director of Information Technology is being fired, even though he wasn’t the one who opened the email. Lake City also plans on revamping the whole IT department.
