The 'Best If Used By' Label Is Causing $161B In Food Waste

The FDA is calling on the food industry to standardize the phrase “best if used by” on our food products.

Confusion caused by competing labels (Use By, Sell By, ect.) causes Americans to throw out roughly a third of our food. That’s about $161 billion per year.

Frank Yiannas, deputy commissioner at the FDA, said, "Consumer research has shown that this phrasing helps consumers understand that the date label is about quality, not safety, and that products do not have to be discarded after the date if they are stored properly.”
