Scientists in Brazil and Ireland want to make spicy tomatoes, not just to make some killer recipes, but because spicy tomatoes would have a lot of potential in the pharmaceutical industry.
Peppers have something called capsaicinoids; molecules that make it spicy. Capsaicinoids are also used in pain killers creams for arthritis patients, and pepper spray. However, peppers are tough to cultivate. Tomatoes though, are much easier to handle.
These scientists also say that tomatoes already have the genes to be spicy in their DNA, they just need to be activated.
